Dr. Halima Begum

Dr. Halima Begum works for the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID). She is currently the First Secretary (Development) and the Beijing-based coordinator for the UK-China Action Plan on Food Security Cooperation. Halima is responsible for promoting collaboration with China on in Asia and Africa, ensuring lessons from China's development informs an international understanding on poverty reduction. Previously she was First Secretary for Education for DFID in Nepal and in London she led the UK's engagement on the global education partnership known as the Fast Track Initiative (FTI). She's also worked at the Centre for Civil Society, at the London School of Economics where she managed a comparative study of social capital; and at Action Aid she worked on a multi-country campaign on basic rights. Halima has published several papers and articles on development and civic participation, including a publication on Social Capital in Action (2004).
